First Week Of Spring

Before southern California finally got some rain this winter thanks to El Niño, I used to think Fall was my favorite season. Fearing the upcoming summer that would soon turn everything brown, I was shocked to see that March brought hope and a lot of stoke. It's tough growing up and not being able to see the seasons change much, something I've longed for ever since I was a kid. I watched movies that took place in the Pacific Northwest and wondered what it would be like to witness it. This year, I finally got a little taste of the transition to Spring. So Cal got enough rain to brighten up the hillsides and allow yellow wildflowers to blossom. My spring break aligned perfectly with the first week of the actual season, so I spent it frolicking around in waist high grass and enjoying the unfamiliar landscapes. I spent a few days camping around in Santa Barbara with old friends, surfing and enjoying a turn of the season.

My cousin, John. My first day of break was spent laying in the grass watching the clouds roll by with this guy.

College has been crazy lately. Drowning in papers and studying for midterms, I recently have found little time for surfing, if any at all. I wasn't going to spend my break without getting in the water. On Monday morning, I packed up all my stuff, made some minor adjustments to the van, and set out back to Santa Barbara to get my fill of waves, sleeping in the hills, and enjoying time with old friends.

 Dozing off.

Preparing. That's Julian in the back sanding off some recently patched dings for a morning session.

At 6:00 AM, my iPhone buzzed while simultaneously playing the "Bell Tower" ringtone. I rolled over from an early morning slumber and tapped my finger all over the screen until the annoying sound finally ceased. The previous night I decided to crash outside of Eddy's house and perform the task of stealth camping in his neighborhood. My plan was to wake up an hour before sunrise and head up the mountain to catch the sunrise and blast some tunes. I followed through with my plan and got to watch the moon set and the sun rise while I made oatmeal. I'd love to start getting up this early every morning.

Name the song I was singing in my head while I took this...

I should have kept track of how much coffee I drank this past week. I probably could have broken some record.

While on my trip, I shot a little project for Moment lenses. I love taking photos on my iPhone because it's always on me and I'm always blown away by the quality you can get from a cell phone. Check it out here.

I don't always take selfies, but when I do, I use a self-timer...  Self portrait just 'cause.

The one thing I kept hearing repeated on the Santa Barbara radio was the high wind advisory. Let's just say I had the pleasure to experience this firsthand. My first night in the mountains I barely got any shuteye because the van was rocking side-to-side all night long. Not to mention the loudness of the winds roaring and nearly ripping my longboard off the top of the roof. But hey, that's vanlife...

 Morning from the bedroom.

Morning from the bedroom.

After seeing hillsides covered in green and flowers blooming like I've never witnessed before, I've come to the conclusion that Spring is my new favorite season. Having the ability to run around in the tall grass makes me reminisce of my childhood. I'm hoping my new preference of time of year will hold true for future years. I hope So Cal will continue to receive steady rainfall and paint the hills with vegetation. I've done a lot of thinking on this solo mission. I'm thankful I have the ability to enjoy the simple things and experience it with great people. This week was a great start to the season. Thanks for tagging along. Happy Easter, friends.
